From Forest Falls to the Fireline

Meet Heidi Esh

When Heidi Esh was completing an internship with the U.S. Forest Service, she heard stories about Interagency Hotshot Crews. Those stories sparked an interest that eventually led her into one of the most physically and mentally demanding careers in wildland firefighting.

Today, Heidi serves on an Interagency Hotshot Crew, spending weeks at a time on wildfire assignments in rugged terrain where teamwork, resilience, and quick thinking are essential. Fire seasons often mean 14- to 21-day assignments, long hours, little sleep, and the determination to keep going when every part of you is tired.

The work demands exceptional physical fitness, mental toughness, and the ability to make good decisions under constantly changing conditions. Yet when asked what has had the greatest impact on her, Heidi doesn't mention awards or accomplishments. Instead, she speaks about witnessing extreme fire behavior, navigating rugged terrain, and the camaraderie built with the people beside her.

When asked what the work requires most, her answer is simple:

"Mental strength. Quick thinking. Resilience."

When I asked if there was one story that stood out above all the others, Heidi laughed.

"Too many stories to tell! So many slices of experience and memories. Many chapters of a life in the seasons of firefighting."

She described the hardest shifts as the most rewarding. Long days with little sleep. Running on determination when nutrition, rest, and energy are in short supply. Controlling difficult sections of fireline in steep, rugged terrain. Catching spot fires. Burning out vegetation to strengthen containment lines. Protecting homes and communities. The quiet moments at remote spike camps sharing MREs with her crew. Twenty-four to forty-eight hour shifts. Night shifts. Swing shifts. The satisfaction of watching a well-executed plan come together.

Perhaps one sentence best captures both her career and her outlook on life:

"The hardest shifts are the most rewarding."

Away from the Fireline, Heidi enjoys spending time with family and friends, mountain biking, relaxing at the lake, and gathering with the people she cares about.

Asked what has shaped her into the person she is today, she doesn't hesitate.

"Resilience in adversity since the day I was born. My mom. Life challenges. Passion. Determination. Grit."

Her message to every mountain community is just as direct:

"Safety, for everyone involved."

Heidi's roots in the mountain community remain strong. With family still living in Forest Falls, including her aunt, Teresa, her connection to the community continues today. Teresa serves on the Board of Directors of FireSafe 38 and has long been known for her dedication to the community.
